Going on holiday? Then get fishing!!
As you may have already seen my blog, you might know I've just come back from Anglesey in North Wales. I went with my lovely wife, Dawn, and Lucy, my black labrador for a weekend of walking and fishing. I've done a fair bit of sea angling before, from boats, piers and beach, but Dawn has never really had a go..... so we thought we would give it a try!
One thing that ALWAYS happens to me when I'm sea fishing is that someone asks; "Have you caught anything?" and they usually follow that up with; "I wish I'd got my tackle". What stops people fishing whilst on holiday? It's brilliant for the whole family, and it can put some fresh fish on the stove if you are lucky enough to catch!
Personally, I think that one of the main reasons that everyday anglers who confidently fishes for carp and other coarse species do not sea fish is a lack of knowledge. It's tough to find a good "mark" from which to fish, tide times can be confusing and the various bits of tackle seems to be mind boggling at times! In reality, sea fishing can be simple, (or as complicated) cheap, (or as expensive) and much more fun when the whole family go!
So, what do you need? For the holiday or occasional sea angler, a 12-13' beachcasting rod capable of launching 5-6ozs is essential when fishing from the beach or shoreline; from the pier, a shorter 9-10' pier rod is ample. Reels; if you have no experience of multiplier reels, then I would advise that you purchase a large fixed spool reel. They are much easier to cast with and leave you with less chance of tangling or even worse, the dreaded 'crack off' when the line wraps around the tip on the cast, 'birds nests' around the multiplier drum or shoots forward so fast the main line parts!
Once you have visited a local tackle shop and looked at the huge array of reasonably priced 'combo' sets available, then you should be able to pick something up within your price range. Some may be ridiculously expensive; some may seem ridiculously cheap; my adv...
